ViDEO: A Peek at the Haven (Hammock) Tent

I have had the Haven a while and messed about with it and napped in it. The fact that it was something different and not the same old gathered end hammock intrigued me.
Like any new design it has pros and cons.
    Pad dependent.
    A bit heavy.
    Somewhat narrow.
    Not crazy about the tarp.

    Very flat lay.
    Versatile. Ground pitches easily.
Just got back from a trip with it and got no condensation!
    No calf ridge.
    Easy in and out.
    Large bugnet.

It is well thought out for what it is.
We are a picky lot and set in our ways so it will not appeal to all.

I added whoopies, my tree straps, dutch biners to ine and use my own tarp pitched to trees. More space.

Take a peek and keep an open mind.

I like the long rambling videos with a mix of yakking, scenery, and hammock gear. the food is usually a nice highlight too

I gotta give Derek credit as he has handled all the stumbles along the way. His vision. I went to buy one back when they started but he wanted to send me one for any notes I may have. He also expected no video and I like that. It is pretty cool and very flat when you get your pitch angle dialed in. I go foot a wee lower on this one.

I had the aim to yammer and yak as I have not been in a video mood of late. But then I was. Had more fun on this trip than I thought I would. Enjoyed my aloneness.
And of course the beauty up there.

Nice video on the Haven tent. If I had not just gotten a gathered end hammock to work for me, then I would have given this thing or a bridge hammock a go. I never was a fan of the Amok Draumr and the Haven looks a bit more practical.

I listened to the HYOH podcast when Derek was on there talking about the Haven. I had a hard time visualizing it at 1st but your video really cleared it up. Good review and thanks for the vicarious camping trip.

Question about the poncho you use, what kind is it and would it work on an external frame pack?

I had fun with it out there and the comfort and sleep surprised me.

    That is the Packa.......http://www.thepacka.com
    From Packa website:
Will the Packa fit my External Frame Backpack?
Will the Packa fit over my Tent, Sleeping Pad, strapped to the outside? Probably not, especially old school externals. I carry an Ospery Exos 48 which has an external frame and the Packa fits fine. However, the regular size Packas work best with internal frame backpacks in the 2000 – 4000 ci range (32 liters - 65 liters). The "X" sizes accomodate packs up to around 5000 ci or 80 liters. If the backpack is too large and takes up all the volume in the packcover, it takes room from the front and the jacket won’t fit correctly nor will the jacket slide out easily from under the packcover when ready to deploy. If the pack is too small, there will be excess room in the packcover which tends to flap around and the jacket fit is affected if the Packa drawstring around the pack is pulled too far up or too far down around the pack. In other words, it is very important that the backpack fit into the packcover section of the Packa easily, but still not be too loose either. Items such as tents and sleeping pad strapped to the outside of the pack generally do not work well with the Packa as they have a tendency to get caught on the jacket part when attempting to deploy.

I use an old Kelty Treker 65. The only thing I really carry strapped to the bottom of the frame is my champ chair but it doesn't extend beyond the frame so it just may work. Thanks

I freely admit, in my mind I had a waaaay different idea of what the Haven Tent would be, and I was sure I would not like it. After watching your video, I'm absolutely sure I want to get one.

Great video Shug, and it reinforces that I want to visit the BWCA area some day. Beautiful place that is.
