Just wanted to follow up on this. When I looked at my trees I realized I was creating a problem where one didn't exist. I have enough room to hang two hammocks side by side. Maybe we hang this way a couple times then next year she'll be ready for some real camping! Thanks for all the comments.

Another solution that I’ve used as a spreader bar is, to use:
•1/2” PVC pipe cut at about 28” long
    • Wooden dowel, largest size to fit inside the pvc pipe. Cut to length. This is for extra strength.
    • Two(2) 1/2” PVC tees

Dry fit everything and test on hammocks before gluing. Trim as needed.

I just run the CLs at the head end of the hammocks through the tees.

Cheap, easy, and fast! Works like a charm. I don’t have any pictures handy, but there are some how-to videos on YouTube.
If you don't know where you are going, you'll end up someplace else.

Been enjoying this thread, thanks everyone for posting. I'm looking to do a first overnight backpacking trip with my 10yo. We did a double hang recently, which went "ok", but we had to overlap tarps since he wasn't comfortable being in his own hammock without being able to see me. Fortunately it didn't rain much, just a light sprinkle. Had there been a real rain, the tarp setup definitely wouldn't have worked. I'm looking to get a Dutchware Two Person Wide Tarp. I'm trying to stay away from a spreader bar setup, because my kid tosses and turns like a jumping bean. I'm pretty sure it'll wake me up during the night. My thought was to hang the foot end to one tree, and the head end to two trees, thus creating separation but keeping us in one tarp. Is this realistic? Does this rely to much on finding just the right triangle of trees? Also will centering the tarp be two difficult in a triangular hang? Any advice would be appreciated.

Assuming the trees will support both of your weights, I’ve hung from the same 2 trees with a double Dutch setup. I just use the trees as a spreader bar and have the hammock straps competing from either side of the tree.

I think we'll be ok weight wise, Our combined weight would be 220lbs. The picture looks like what I want to do. So as long as the trunk is thick enough we should stay apart reasonably well.

I have a 12x12 Chill Gorilla Tarp, do you think this would be wide enough to use the ENO spreader bar(s), or should I just try to find a wider tree?

That's a big tarp. I have a 12' x 10' Journey tarp and it covered both hammocks. Had it staked out pretty wide. You should be fine.
