Shock cord for tarp ridgeline tie-outs? Superfly came undone in high wind

I made the mistake of leaving porch mode up during high winds on the island I'm on. What I experienced was the split ring pulled out of my Superfly tieout at the ridgeline and the superfly wrapped around my hammock. I don't think there was any damage to the tarp but I was wondering if it's the optimal setup to have tarp ridgeline to split ring to stingerz to zing-it or should there be some shock absorption in the setup?

Your split ring did it’s job. It made the ultimate sacrifice. You should thank it when you send it on it’s way. That’s just what split rings are for - to fail first before your tarp. I have my bungie and solid guy line attached to a split ring on the tarp, then I put a little slack in the guy line and attach the other end of the bungee so the bungee can only stretch upon about 80% of its max length. That’s about 8 inches, then the rest of the guy line continues to a stake. That gives the tarp a little spring so it can 1) spill some wind if it gets strong enough. 2) stay taut if it stretches a little bit.

I would not put shock cord on the ridge line but I did use split rings in my first rigging configuration. That’s because the tarp was part of the load bearing system - like an oval around two trees where the tarp was on side of the oval. Now I’m using a solid line between two trees and hanging the tarp off it with Nama Claws or prusiks. It’s more like a hammock sagging under it’s structural ridge line. The split rings on the guy lines are my “failure test”. If one of those goes, it’s time to rethink location/orientation/“What am I doing here?"
In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.

The timing on this thread is hilarious. I have a new Thunderfly I set up & seam sealed today. I’m using a Dutch CRL with Tatos. I’m trying to figure out if I like the Tatos or would rather go with the shock cord at the bottom tarp instead. Still undecided....

The split rings referred to are standard on Warbonnet’s tarps. They look like mini key chain rings.

Ha! Didn't know about the purpose of the split ring. Threaded my tarp ticks onto them and they were a ***** to get open enough to get the ticks on and off

I stopped using shock cords. Might be wrong, but think they add movement to the setup and that constant movment helps the stakes come out.
I keep it tight with Mason line or small plastic s-biners as a safety link.

I just sent WB an email asking for replacements. I tried searching for a suitable replacement but ultimately would have better peace of mind using the same with the same rating.

I understand the idea of the split ring being sacrificial but what is the plan if your split ring opens up at night in high winds and buckets of rain coming down? Derating my weather protection system during the worst circumstances seems counterintuitive.
