    Sewing needles

    Hello hammock diy-ers!

I've read that I should use an 80/14 needle for sewing nylon. I don't know much about sewing but do have some needles on hand, none are 80/14 but 11/80, seems wildy different on the numbers.

    Would any of these work?

"....the best style of needle to use when sewing ripstop nylon is a sharp, pointed needle. Use a universal, size 70/10 needle when sewing ripstop nylon."

Looks like you have a variety pack. The first 3 are 2020 universal needles and the last 2 are 2045 ball point needles.used for knit fabrics

You need to match needle with thread size If thread is too big to flow through the eye easily it will break the thread. Hard to go wrong with the 14 unless you are sewing sub 1 oz square yard nylons. I used to worry about using the smallest needle I could but now sew almost everything with a size 14

Thread size together with needle size matters. I picked this up somewhere years ago and can't take credit for it.

    Needle sizes (Conversions)

    MR 2.0 = Nm 70 = Size 10
    MR 2.5 = Nm 75 = Size 11
    MR 3.0 = Nm 90 = Size 14
    MR 3.5 = Nm 100 = Size 16
    MR 4.0 = Nm 110 = Size 18
    MR 5.0 = Nm 130 = Size 21
    MR 6.0 = Nm 140 = Size 22

    Gutterman

    Mara M70 Tex 40 recommends needles 14-16
    Mara M100 Tex 30 recommends needles 10-12
    Tera 80 Tex 35 recommends needles 10-14
    Sew-all recommends needles 10-14

    Thread/Needle selection by project

OK, here's a simple chart that I use with great success building quilts, packs & tarps:

Quilt seams & hems: M50/M90/1.1 rip (uncoated) - Microtex 70/10 with Gutermann "SewAll" ie Mara 100 (Tex 30)

    Tarp & pack seams & hems: 1.3 sil (1.1 coated) - Microtex 80/12 with Guterman Mara 70 (Tex 40)

Tarp tie-outs; pack attach points & buckles (shoulder, sternum & hip straps) - Microtex 90/14 with Gutermann Mar 70 (Tex 40)
