    Ridgeline Material Question

Hey everyone. Have a quick question I'm hoping someone can answer. So I have an over night trout fishing trip coming up on Friday. However, my son, in ways I'll never comprehend, in his 5 year old mind, decided the ridgeline in my gathered end would make good cutting practice for the scissors he found while it was hanging in the back yard. I now do not have time to order any amstel or lashit. Is there anything I can pick up at Lowes that will get me through a night while I wait on the other to be delivered? Thanks for any suggestions anyone can give.

Utility line or even some paracord will work. Stretches a bit but works.

Thanks Shug. I was looking at getting a length of polyester rope since it has much less stretch. I'm assuming the ridgeline does not take much in the way of weight when hanging so I'm hoping it will stand up to it.

Smckinney, I would but so far I've recovered 8 pieces of it across the yard.

Almost any kind of low-stretch cord should work. It isn’t required for safety, just consistency. I have one hammock with cheap white nylon stuff from Walmart and it’s been going for several years.

The trick is to not make the ridge line structural. By that I mean it absorbs minimal or no force when the hammock is hung because you have the correct hang angle. If you use the correct hang angle, your ridge line could be a piece of string. You are just using it as a long measuring “stick” to show you how far apart you want the hammock ends to be.
In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.

this gentleman knows his stuff. that sums it up. in practical terms, this means that if the trees are "too far apart", the ridge line most likely becomes structural, if they are not too far apart, it stays a "measuring stick". what "too far apart" means you can find using a hang caclulator like the one on the ultimate hang, and adjusting it so the height of the tree straps is the height you can comfortably reach, then see what the resulting distance between trees is. but don't worry too much, make it the correct length, out of whatever you have, and just remember, if when you get in it feels taut, then you should try to find a way to raise the straps on the trees (and lengthen the suspension), if it hangs slack, either shorten the suspension, or if you're quite confortable, leave it and enjoy.
