Total let down but I'm knot sure why.

Over the weekend I was experimenting with a Becket hitch. I have 1/2" strap CL on the hammock and usually use a Hummingbird style strap/whoopie sling. I used the loop of the " Amsteel whoopie to tie a slippery Becket hitch to the CL. When I got in... it held for a second then flop down I went as the Becket hitch slipped. Thing is when I looked at the knot it was still tied correctly and the tucked tag end was still looped like I tied it. I was not really in the mood to fuss so I just hooked it all up as normal.

But during a particularly long staff meeting today, it started to bug me, how could this thing slip, yet leave the knot tied?

I'm not really a knot guy but I had to LOL when I got to the part "during a particularly long staff meeting" and I don't even go to meetings, just funny to hear a good example of how much most of us think about this stuff. Anyway, for your question like I said I'm not a knot guy but I'm thinking the line slipped through the bury and left the knot in tact if that makes sense. IDK, not really the guy to answer hear just wanted to say I thought your comment was funny. Thanks for the laugh

yeah, I thought of that, as the whoopie was fully out. but it still does not make since as the fold at the end of the loop becomes the tag end for knot tying. Glad you got a laugh though. cheers.

I don't think amsteel is the best rope to tie a Beckett with. Might be too slippery.
    Better to use a strap.

I don't have answer.. though if your CL is a strap and you're putting a becket in it with Amsteel, it's kind of the opposite of a traditional setup.. Tree strap and amsteel CL's.

What prompted my response was the particularly long staff meeting. I have three of those a week. I always walk away with a few hammock related sketches and the thought... We could have been just as efficient with one email to each other.
Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....

Being one of those "knot challenged old people" I had a simlar experience with some lightweight strap material that got "ropey".Tied it correctly,it's just too slippery like Shug said. And it was difficult to get the knot to release too!

But being a firm believer in "old age and trickery will triumph over youth and skill" I think I have circumvented the issue by using an Evo Loop for my CL.I tie the becket such that it latches onto that big honkin' knot of the Evo Loop which has a little pull loop so it will all release properly.I also flatten and smooth my Spider strap material each time I take down hammock and so far it has not failed me.....

Yes it is backwards. I figured Amsteel on Amsteel would be too slick. Thought I'd experiment to see if amsteel knot on strap was also too slick. I got in very carefully expecting to go down.

Yeah, if you're trying a regular becket hitch in amsteel, yer goin down.

You might get it to work with a double becket, but i wouldnt trust that in amsteel either.

A J-Bend will probably work because its more a jam than a true knot.

You could also use a rubber-band knot / square knot to loop the loops together first and then make your whoopie sling connection up towards the tree end as usual (toggle, clip, or whatever)

Sad to say.. I am glad you tried it first.

I recently had the conversation with another HF member about using a webbing CL, with Amsteel leader and short Kevlar hugger. We decided it wasn't worth the minimal (if any) weight saving.
