Make underquilt from child's mummy bag?

I'm very new to hammocks and am almost ready to do a short backpack trip with mostly gear-on-hand.

I have a Byer of Maine netted hammock which I've slept in for the past week. I have a Kelty Noah's tarp 9 (14' diagonal) for rain shelter. I have a down sleeping bag which works fine as a top quilt.

I tried using a pad in the hammock and it sucks. I want to rig an underquilt. We have a REI Zigzag 15 youth mummy bag which my kids outgrew years ago. It's a full mummy with hood, with sewn footbox, synthetic insulation. I was thinking of cutting the hood and footbox to make it a trapezoid, 54" long by 52" at the top and 40" at the bottom. It is 33 oz now but would go down a few after removing hood, foot panel, and zipper.

Has anyone modified a mummy bag to become an underquilt? Was it worth the trouble?

    Thanks,
    Jim

3/4 length UQ from a rectangular bag rather than a mummy, but you'd be cutting it up anyway.

Added a channel from some of the cut away fabric for bungee cord at the head and foot. Loops on each corner ( not used, but also 1/2 way down each side) to tie the suspension onto.

    Was it worth it?
Well, it works OK and cost £12 for a cheap supermarket bag and some time.
