Even with 20 degree top quilt and bottom quilt, I have woken up in the early morning with a less than warm feeling. Temps in the 20’s and teens. We are now in process of doing zero degree quilts. I love to never shiver.

If we are talking how low can it go, then I have done my -40 UQ and my -20 TQ, down to minus 20 and was snug and warm! I sleep frozen though so I do not like to push it any colder then that.

Note that kattdogg is from WI. They probably give -40 UQ’s at baby showers so the eventually little tike will have the gear she needs once she starts adventuring.
In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.

Digging into a lot of UL pack lists, and even for the lightest of ground pounders, it's one of the more static items in the kits. Usually the discussion goes from bag to quilt for weight savings. Very few suggest losing insulation value in your TQ as a good way to cut a few ounces in most general cases.

Anyway since I hike in the same seasons, my UL insulation kit won't change much. Lighter shell materials, higher down FP are about the only fiddle factors available, and in reality there are still other places to shore up weight penalties w/o compromising insulation ratings.

lol I wish, I sleep frozen so I was always stacking quilts and stuff when it got cold! A bunch in my group picked on me cause I was buying the minus 40 (from Loco libre), until they saw it, then it was "oh if you want to sell that ill take it off your hands" lmao
