Question Suspension Length / Beetle Buckle

Looking to order Dutch Beetle Buckle suspension with poly/spider webbing. What is your recommended length? I want to make an educated decision given I’m new to hammock camping. I will be backpacking mostly on the AT in CT, VT, NH. Thank you for any insight.

In general, longer is better. It allows you to deal with wider spacing between trees, and trees with substantial girth. Not sure what kind of trees there are in the area you mentioned. But I would definitely recommend the 12 over the eight foot.

Easy to cut if it's to long.

12' is probably plenty. If in doubt, order 15'ers. You can always shorten them.

I used to use 15' tree straps but in 99% of the time, most of the tree strap length hung unused. Not a huge problem, but I got annoyed with always having to tie the straps out of the way. So I switched to 12' tree straps, which maybe work 95% of the time, but still need tying up often. Since it's so easy to use extensions (dog bones or whoopie slings) with the Beetle Buckles, I'm likely to go down to 10'. The tree strap only needs to fit around the tree, which would still allow me to hang from trees with a diameter of about 37" and use the extension to hang the hammock. Of course you need to remember to pack the extensions However, I try to hang from the slimmest trees available anyway. The shorter tree straps remind me of that.

I just wrap it a 2nd or 3rd time on small trees. Better for the tree and keeps it off the ground. I usually wash the straps in a mesh bag when I get home.

Did 36 miles in Gila and was glad I had the 15 footers - the chances that you could be forced into big trees and long hangs is real - also like the long strap in case it is needed for something else. I was worried about the loose end hanging down and being in the way but not an issue (also soaked in permethrin so did not create super highway for spiders/ticks/ants).

Weight seemed negligible to me (compare to 12 footers) but I am not weight sensitive if doing less thaN 15 miles a day.

I like that permethrin idea. Think I'll give it a try.

Nope. Listen to Hutzelbein. If you were in the Pacific NW with mostly big trees, maybe long straps would make sense. I look for 6" to 8" trees because they're less likely to drop widow-makers on me. Long straps are heavy, and they're even heavier when they're wet. Sometimes it rains. I buy a 12' strap and cut it into 5' and 7 ' pieces.
