Smile Overnight in Quehanna - 22 miles

Took a good friend and his girl on trip to the Quehanna Trail in Moshannon/Elk State forest. This was the 1st time I used my Raven hammock from Dream Hammocks. Gotta say its the best sleep I've had in a hammock ever!! I've been all over this Quehanna except for the SE portion and found it to be the most scenec area of them all. Temps got down to 40 degrees at night.
    Route:
    1. Parked at the Hover Farm Viewing Area UTM - 17T QF 35400 67991
    2. Took the David Lewis Trail to Red Run Trail. David Lewis is a wet trail
    3. Red Run Trail to Meeker Trail
    4. Meeker Trail to the Q.T.E.C.C (Quehanna Trail East Cross Connector) Trail
    5. Q.T.E.C.C to Quehanna Trail
    6. Quehanna Trail to Three Run Tower Road (we decided to shorten up the hike here) 17TQF 4106365641
    7. Three Run Tower Road to Old Sinnemahoning Trail (north)
    8. Old Sinnemahoning Trail to Number 11 Trail (west) 17TQF 3942367056
    9. Number 11 Trail to Twister Trail which took us to vehicle.

    Notes:
    • There are very few established campsites on this side of the Quehanna. We stayed at 17TQF 3820763562 which is left of the bridge and big enough for a few hammocks and has a great waters source.
    • Timber Rattle Snakes are all over the place here. We came close to two of them. Just be aware
    • Bears are here. We had a very large black bear walk right into our camp just after 7pm. He's either deaf or didn't care about people. After yelling at him his ran up the hill. We saw him again as soon a we broke camp.
    • There's a log bridge with a cable to cross mosquito creek

    Route

    Camp

    Tarp take down

Timber Rattler at the base of tree

    Timber Rattler in Log

    Crossing Mosquito Creek

    Vista overlooking Mosquito Creek

Old pumping station for the nuclear engine test facility

    Mountain Laurel in full bloom

Your guess is as good as mine some ancient wooden phallic symbol found on the trail??

I've never seen more ferns than i have here in Quehanna

    Very cool!

I hope you had washed your hand really well after handling that ancient marital aide.

I walked right beside him. Too many years in the Army has done a job on my hearing. I really didnt heat the rattle until I stopped and listened for it. By that time I was about 3 feet away and he was in the typical s-shape strike/defensive position. That boy was as thick as my forearm and nasty looking!

Thanks for the pics and info. I've been wanting to do the Quehanna for almost 30 years. Just never got to it as we were always warned about the prison and then the radioactive water from the old warplane and nuclear complex. I'm hoping that all has turned a page now.
