Has anyone ever used either of the above methods to do the hems and end channels on a diy hammock?

Are you asking about using tape/ glue instead of using thread?
Yes I am. I have an old sewing machine sitting around I just don't know if it works or what it needs
I wouldnt trust if for the end channels to be honest

I might try it on the side hem, but definitely NOT the ends! You'd be better off sleeping on the ground, 'cause that's where you'll end up!!!
Old sewing machines can be treasures - they were built stronger back then. I use a couple of Singer 15-91s (forward, back, no zig-zag). What kind do you have? Fix it up.

Fabric glue is not a permanent solution and not a substitute for stitching. On synthetics it easily pulls apart.
If you are cutting corners, you can ignore the hems and tie the ends with a sheep bend hammock done in 5 minutes. the hems are pretty easy though and so is the end channel. The end channel has to be strong. It is recommended that you sew down it at least 3x. Do not trust an adhesive. You should give the machine a go and see what happens. So what if your stitching starts out looking like a wandering cow path. You will get better. (I had to cut the center seam out of my tarp and start over. It looks OK now. Not perfect, but serviceable) have fun
