    Hammock fading/ uv damage

Hey guys this is my first post in quite a while but I just started getting all my gear together to start backpacking. I have a grand trunk two person nylon hammock that I had been using to just hang in my yard that is quite faded from being left outside quite a bit aside from it just being ugly should I be worried about the fabrics' strength at all?

UV damage...it's not a problem, until it is.

In normal use, I wouldn’t worry about UV. For me, “Normal Use” means I put the hammock up towards the end of the day and take it down in the morning. Even if I were on a multiday trip where it was up for a few days - that’s fine. But I would not leave it out all day for say a month. There are “skins” made for hammocks - they are like the snake skins used with tarps but bigger diameter. Their purpose it to protect the hammock from UV - Like if it was going to be setup all summer. You pull the skin over it when not in use.

As far as your current one - only you can tell. But it still might have use. You could use it as a gear hammock to keep all your stuff off the ground. When I kayak camp, everything is in dry bags and I hate to rummage through them again and again. If I’m using a gear hammock, once I take something out of the dry bag (or pack, if I’m hiking) it goes in the gear hammock because odds are, I’ll need to use it a second time.

In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.

UV rays do age hammock materials over time...
It's a judgement call, which only you can make.
We should be checking our hammocks & suspension periodically anyway, they don't last forever.
