Glad you made the jump! I agree with all your points, maybe especially peeing from under the tarp if needed. That was an easy transition for me, as I tipi and tarp camped long before switching to a hammock. I don't do it if the weather is good, but in a blowing snowstorm, it's a nice option. Speaking of which, and you touched on this, one of the things that really sold me (other than the much better night sleep), was being stuck in my mountaineering tent during a 2 day blizzard. Pretty miserable. But in a hammock... I love having to spend more time in it, lol

I primarily sleep in the Warbonnet blackbirds, the shelf is nice for keeping thing inside, hat jacket, what ever. I also put in a ridge line organizer. That's where my glasses and phone stay. A bug light is pinched to the ridge line, so it doesn't move. Side sleeping no problem. I also keep a camp chair next to me (under the tarp). Water bottle, bear spray and shoes are on the chair in easy reach.

One of the things the hammock and tarp provide that tents don't, is the flexibility to change it. The playing with different suspension, hardware, knots, etc, gives me something to play with between trips.

From there use your hardware store tarps until you're ready to spend on that piece, and your sleeping bags work just fine unzipped as a quilt.

I think the Go! Outfitters tarp might be a good intermediate tarp at $50 on Amazon.
