I always stake out both ends. Even so, in soft ground I once trebucheted a 8" gutter nail 60 yards down the field.

I've tacoed a few times getting started, nothing too bad. Problem is I got the SO to try out my hammock and I apparently didn't secure the anchor well enough...woops. Doesn't leave a good taste. (I'm looking for another stand for said SO to try.)

I am fairly certain one of these nights I will a) sit in my UQ or b) taco doing up the bugnet, probably just after the midnight pee break while I'm half asleep.

I forgot to stake out the foot end of my DIY stand one night when I was tired and in a rush. It was a learning experience for sure, and one that I haven't forgotten since.

Happened once to me when I had the foot tether orange screw not far enough out and not at the right angle on our front yard. That was funny as hell but a bad night to happen as I was really tired to begin with. My daughter and wife were in their's too so after they saved me, I made sure we had done their's correct as well.

Yes! Just built one yesterday for taking in my camper for desert areas. Thought I'd try the one stake trick. After a bit inside I'd scootched down a bit with gravity and when I sat up, wham! So, for me, I'll be using two stakes!

4 1" EFT 10' conduit pieces about $5 each, 4 - 1' pieces of stainless cable $.37 each, and stainless cable clamps (the expensive part) about $4 each. Left tow of the conduits at 10' for possible tarp, but I'll be in my camper so really won't need it. Think I'll cut them down to 8' as well. If it rains, I'll go inside!

it sounds like this is a rite of passage. Like you are not a hammocker until you accidently sit on your UQ (or UQP) instead of your hammock. Same for clamshell and Tensa4 owners? Glad to read that most experience a slow-ish descent.
In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.

Seems like I've experienced most of the rites of passage in my short experience with hammocking and camping: Tensa4 taco, sat in the UQ, burned my pant leg, froze my water, and forgot my hammock. Most of these I have done only once so I've got that going for me. Haven't sliced or stabbed myself - yet.
The game is the best teacher.

I've done all 3. Tacoing my Tensa didn't happen til this passed weekend. I slid waaaaay up into the peak so I could reach out and close the Tarp doors. Later I did it again. Other than the tent stake flying past me, though, it's quite the gentle fall. Almost soothing, really, being laid tenderly on the ground by the stand. I did it again for fun. Then I remembered I'm an adult, so the third time was an experiment. I think everyone with a Tensa4 should try it, just to see what it's like.
