That's the safe route... rather have 'em and not need 'em than the reverse.

I have side panel pull-outs and use them all the time. I like to pitch the tarp broad side to the wind and it eliminates the "piñata effect."

In this photo there was quite a stiff breeze and yet the hammock was unaffected.

I have a Superfly and hadn't really used them before until last summer when I got stuck in a wicked thunderstorm. I quickly tied the side panels off to adjacent trees and it really helped everything feel more secure with the crazy wind.

    Good show...

One of those things that when you NEED them and don't have them, you'll regret it.

Truth told, I have them on all of my tarps and have used them exactly once. With a strong wind coming over a ridge, the windward side was collapsing in. The night would have been brutal without it. Otherwise I never use them.

I'll second the under-tarp pole mod as a much better all-around options. That turns your tarp into a circus tent, if that's your thing.

That is how I used it. I did a DIY 2QZQ pole mod on four old tarps and added additional tie out points there. The pole mod is killer. Just not something I would use with DCF tarps.

'You either need them or you don't" well put.

That's why I've used these for years now. https://dutchwaregear.com/product/cl...arp-pull-outs/

Great to keep tarp stakes from pulling in extreme weather. Don't use them on every hang, but they always get to come along. Negligible cost and weight penalty.

I've used them on the same AHE Toxaway for over 5 years now and can tell of no wear or marks. Like I mentioned you don't use them on every hang, and since each hang is different in one aspect or another, it doesn't even seem they go in the same spot all that much. Don't need to seal tie-out patches either. there are none.

I've used them to fashion and seal doors in a pinch. 12' RL on a 10.5' hammock works pretty good actually.

An extra set and you could even configure them to work as double pole mods without too much trouble.

That's a lot of fiddling to be done for $8.50
