Just some follow-up on this, perhaps to help anyone else with this in the future:
So I did get the tarp snakeskin (mesh, HG) and added some dutch flyz and hookworms. I added dutch biners to the strap loops (which in turn are attached to the whoopies).
All good, and all have helped improve efficiency.
Practice, practice, practice. I am just tearing it all down and resetting it in new trees a few times every day...just whenever I am out in the yard, I try some new trees. Different spans, angles, etc all make a difference, and I still guess wrong a fair amount and need to make adjustments. But an increasing percentage of the time I get it right the first time after a reasonably speedy (say 6-8 minutes) setup...so that's pretty satisfying.
Thanks to everyone for chipping in thoughts, ideas and encouragement!
Will test again in a few weeks when we go back to the BWCA...and Ontario if they ever let us unhygienic AmeriVectors back in.

True enough, and I might try this (but will still probably forget which end the biner is on). The only time I'm in a hurry is in the rain, so getting the tarp up as quickly as possible matters. Everything else I can take my time with.

Tie a piece of colored micro cord from the head end biner. You'll never have a problem figuring out which end is which.
Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....
