First DIY hammock.

I've had a DD Frontline for a while and quite like it. However all this free time, watching too much YouTube and finding this forum got me thinking about something different.

So I ordered some 70gsm nylon to make a basic single layer gathered end. It turned out OK, at 58"wide and 125" at the gather. But the sides were too floppy, so knotty mod done.

I made, tried and hated the Fronky style bugnet so decided to stick with an integrated net, as I like the Frontline.

Meanwhile lots of trial and error with different RL and gathers later, the hammock was still just OK. So I decided to try the WBBB clone and ordered the zips, as the rest would be reworkable from this and the netting that I have.

But I was bored this morning and started thinking about a sewn in foot box 🤔

Many adjustments to the GE and RL later and oh wow that's comfy.

I think the insert should have been two inches towards the foot end and an extra 1/2"wider at the top left may have eliminated the stretch across the foot box. Or it could have ended up all wrong.

Lunch followed by a two hour nap says that's a success.

But I need a slightly longer tarp than the DD 3x3.

Oh ya, that's nice! Well done on that. Nothing like making your own, and even better when it works right.

Did you cut a notch in the original sidewall, or just sew the footbox additional straight on to the existing hemline?

I hemmed all round the addition, then overlapped the two shorter sides onto the edge of the main body. The long side becoming the new edge of the hammock.
Had I not cut off and resewn the end channel this morning, the foot box could have been unpicked and reverted back.

Looks very nice, congratulations. But is still a long distance to go. My advice, make it as easy as possible.

Five years ago I had almost the same ideas in my mind. My first hammock was also a DD Frontline hammock. Imo too short and too narrow for my body size. I first sewed several small WBBB clone hammocks with different footbox sizes. I racked my brain about the best bugnet solution. At that time the Blackbird XLC was fresh on the market. In the final end I decided to make my hammock a bit longer, as wide as possible and forget the footbox. The result was an extra long mixture of a XTrekker/Dreamhammock clone. This way the integrated bugnet solution was much easier to find, with Papasmurf's nice zipper carousel.
