With Gutermann Sew All thread, my cheap machine actually works quite well. However with the previous no name thread. I spent more time cutting away knots and un jamming it. All the dust, twists and lower strength had me thinking the machine, or me was useless.
+1 Can’t stress enough how much a good quality thread will make a difference.

I usually order 12 feet and end up with 11’4” hammocks after sewing. I have both wide (for home/car camping) and 58-60 inch wide. They are fairly easy to make. If you mess up, thread ripper, while a pain, does provide a do over. Standard material has been 1.6 ounce HyperD from RBTR.

Another nudge. Go for it and enjoy. You won’t be disappointed.

HyperD and whoopies: ordered. Needles and guttermans thread, too. Gotta dig Grandma's sewing machine out and start practicing.

Feel free to ask questions.. either here or via PM.

If you want a pattern, dig around in my image albums here.. there is likely more than one in there.

A hammock is all straight seams and no fancy techniques needed.

Are you planning a channel end or whipped end?
Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....

Channel, as it's what I know (all my store bought hammocks have channels). I have just started looking into whipped as an option and I'm interested in pros and cons.

All the hammocks I made I just whipped them as I was not adding sewn on bugnets. Easy too.
You can see me showing and talking whipping at 6:10 in video below.

I'm considering some suspension experimentation. Is there any reason I wouldn't want to use a whoopie sling Larks Headed through the hammock channel?

(Only reason I can think of is in the event of a tight hang area... Might be a bit long.)
