FREE hang/camp site in NC mountains

We live in NC 1/2 mile from VA and 6 miles from TN....7 miles from Grayson Highlands SP. Big Horse Creek runs through our property and there is an island in the middle of the creek where a grist mill once stood. It is now overgrown in rhododendron and hemlock trees. I have cleared out a large fire-pit/sitting area, 2 tent sites large enough for 2 person tents and 2-3 hang sites. Nice swimming hole 100 yds downstream!!

We only ask that you remove all trash and do not cut any additional vegetation. We can be reached via email if you would like to camp/hang here: [email protected]

Thanks for the offer. Next question: are there any trout in the creek and would fishing be allowed with proper license???
Would be interested after the fall Grayson Festival Fall hang at end of Sept if that is allowed to happen. Come on over to that hang: it is in your backyard so to speak. Watch for thread in this forum sometime around middle of July.

Big Horse Creek is one of the best trout streams in NC. We are on the catch & release section (stocked sections ends 1/4 mile down stream). 1/4 mile upstream the creek leaves the road and it is remote for the next 5 miles up to VA and the Virginia Creeper Trail White Top Train Station. NC license and trout stamp will be needed.

I have visited with several hangers at the festival over the years. This year we will be leaving in mid-September for S. Utah and Arizona in our RV. You are more than welcome to come but we need to set things up ahead of time.

Thanks. License is not a problem as I have Life Time Sportsman since it began. Catch and release is good by me. Will coordinate if we get to have the Grayson Hang.

That is very generous of you. I've fished Big Horse Creek in Lansing a few times and have wanted to fish in your area. I also wanted to take my granddaughter camping this summer. This may be the perfert opportunity to do both. I will let you know if I can coordinate it. Thanks in advance.

Would this area be friendly to on-leash socialized dogs (of course picking up their waste and removing it with ours)?

I am looking for some western N.C. locations to checkout and break in my hammock setup (after I pick it all out haha). I typically camp with my small 14lb Yorkie Poo. Was hoping to take her hanging with me as well. Completely understand if that isn’t an option. Just curious. Thank you again.
