    Superfly vs Mountainfly vs Thunderfly

I'm looking into getting a Silpoly tarp for the weight and pack space savings. I currently have a 10 x 10 tarp, which isn't bad for Summer, however I want something with some doors that is still light. Does anyone have experience with some of these (hopefully multiple). Is it worth the weight savings to have smaller doors and cat cuts, or should I spring for the Superfly? Or does anyone have a better suggestion?

    Thanks!

I have a Superfly and the Thunderfly. While I’m more used to the Superfly, I’m starting to use the Thunder much more here lately and I’m learning just how versatile this tarp is. I think it’s going to be my default tarp going forward.

After using bigger and smaller tarps, I finally sold my HG Dyneema Palace and settled on the Mountainfly.

Basically the side coverage I need (like the Superfly) w/a bit less door coverage, which in practice I do not miss. I'm happy with everything except it weighing more than my Palace

Same here. There has to be a very high chance of storms or big rain, over a rather long period of time, for me to up it to the superfly.

I had a Superfly, but then changed it for a Winterdream because I needed a 13ft lenght, I wanted the inner pole mod and like the snaps on the door.

First trip 2nd night I had a stormy night on a camping area with only few trees and lots of empty space for the wind to blow from the sides. I was truly glad that I had my doors and slept very well, knowing that all my stuff would remain dry. The snaps performed very well.

I get the feeling that global warming brings us stormy thunderstorms which are more frequent and more violent.

Nice, this is all very good feedback, thanks a ton. I've been mulling over this stuff for a while now. I was also thinking the Mountainfly is a good tweener, lots of side cover and decent doors, as well.

There are doors and there are DOORS. I have a ThunderFly and its doors do help with “normal” blowing rain. But in a major “Batten down the hatches” storm or in the winter when you want doors for heat conservation, or a camping companion who wants more privacy may be using it, then go for the SuperFly. If you are buying new, you could get one, then watch for the other to come up in For Sale. But they are pretty close. Maybe MiniFly as the second tarp would give you more of a Big Dog/Little Dog option.

I replaced my 11 ft SuperFly with a 13 ft model because it will primarily be used with a Ridge Runner by a person who wants more privacy. So my 11 ft’er will be for sale once I get around to listing it. Remember, with either of those tarps, when new, will need to have the panel pulls (if you get that option) sealed (sealer is provided).
In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.

If you have a light/fair weather tarp, is pick up the superfly. You'll be covered for good weather and then have something for winter or bad weather.
