Experiment. Try the V, dont try the V. HYOH. I dont think Derek was being anal retentive or just trying to sell books. Then again, my whoopie slings arent stretched as tight as some.

I usually just keep the hammock on the right side of the tree and the tarp on the left if the tree isn't to big. If its large tree tarp comes from the middle. I am sure some people would worry that they aren't perfectly aligned. It's just hammocking, not rocket science.

I guess that I am in the minority and prefer the V. With Stingerz on my tarp, I have no problem getting my tarp up without having to adjust it's center multiple time as some have complained. It is as easy to me as any other ridgeline setup.

I agree. If you already have you hammock up, all you do is whip the tarp line around one tree and hold the tarp out to "measure up" to see how it's covering the hammock before locking it in. So you know the other side will be set. Doesn't get any simpler IMO.

I've not really found the "V" to be necessary. Everything works fine if the hammocks suspension is just to the side of the tarps ridgeline.

I've also found that if the trees are closer than ideal the "V" becomes an issue.

It seemed to be perpetuated as necessary by the Ultimate Hang books.

I tried the V a couple of times early on just for the halibut (Hat tip: Phantom) and didn't see that it solved a problem.

Of course, I experimented with a lot of stuff and kept eliminating everything and ended up with just a few pieces of string!

Those really are good books but there is such a blizzard of info and options that it is bewildering for the beginner.

Let me ask a question. How are people NOT creating a V? Maybe I'm dumb, but you wrap a line around a 12" tree, there's gonna be a V. At least with hardware like Tarp Flys and Figure 9s, which I assume so many people use.
