Thoughts on "V" shape of ridgeline?

Hey there - apologies upfront if this is repetitive, can't for my life figure out how to work the HF search

How do you feel about the necessity of the V shape in the tarp ridgeline?

As far as i can tell, the only reason for it is to avoid the hammock and tarp suspension rubbing up against each other (any other reasons?).......but the idea that webbing/cordage rubbing against each other will wear it down or something, doesnt really check out it my brain. Just curious whether people really think it matters, or if there are other reasons for rigging it that way

Personally, I think the V is just some anal-retentive idea that Derek from the Ultimate Hang came up with. What does it solve? The hammock suspension doesn't rub against the tarp ridgeline? What possible reason should I care if it rubs?

I've actually heard people say they love the V because they're worried there will be wear. I've never seen any wear.

Others have said they can "hear" the ridgeline and suspension rubbing against each other. I have extremely keen hearing and have never "heard" the ridgeline and suspension rubbing. However, when you are trying to sell a book (The Ultimate Hang), you gotta have something to sell. Derek has quite a few ideas I don't find particularly useful, but the V is certainly one of the most "invented" problems he's ever tried to solve.

I did try the V a couple of times before saying, "What am I doing? This is a waste of time." It's a bit of a stretch for me to use a system for "wear" I can't see, and "rubbing" I can't hear.

Agree with SS... not a necessity. I do setup this way sometimes but not to reduce wear or noise.

Getting the v done proper can be annoying, and limits certain things like rigging style and tree distance.
Let 'er rub, or hang the tarp from one side of the tree and the hammock off the other.

I have never seen the need for the V.

Yes, I have had my suspensions rub on each other.
Yes, I can hear it.
No, I don't see issue with it

I am using the same tree straps for three seasons and see no issues on the straps, tarps or ridge lines. The extra cordage, hardware, prussiks, biners and mental gymnastics all seem unnecessary.

I like my V. It came standard and I never really saw a way around it. I started with 1.75 zing-it with Dutchware Tarp Flyz and never looked at any other option.

I think the V might have come about because of a human proclivity for symmetry. If you present someone with two circles and ask for a line to be drawn between them, my guess is the person will draw the line from the center of one circle to the center of the next. It just “seems” fair and balanced. If the line is drawn tangent to one side of a circle to the side of the other circle there are decisions - which side to use. Or to use the left side of one to the right side to the other or same side for both. Exhausting

I will be trying to break the center habit this summer. I know in theory that there is less wear/strain on the line if it comes off the side to the tree because it doesn’t tug bad against itself or some hardware connector. Just have to make coming off the side the new normal.

I've done it when it makes sense. But usually I just have my webbing or whoopie sling to the side of my tarp line. I have heard rubbing before but just get up and do a tweak and all done.

I had to get out my book to remember what the "V" was. I've never worried too much about them touching. Often times they don't. Find a way you like and get good at it enough you can do it in the dark.

That's kind of what I figured too

Not worrying about it makes rigging the ridgeline a little simpler and saves my already limited brainpower. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something - sounds like consensus is that most don't care/think it matters
