    DIY Wuhan Topquilt

This past week, I finished my second big DIY project... a Climashield APEX 2.5 top quilt.

I've got an old BPL Cocoon 60 synthetic that's performed well over the years but I wanted an updated 3-season quilt. When I started thinking about a DIY quilt, I didn't want to mess with down or the expense since this was my first quilt. I found a good instructional video by Backcountry Banter which was really helpful even though I wound up doing mine a little differently. I chose to make mine with a drawcord foot box with draft collar & used Kam Snaps versus a zipper or sewn in foot box.

For the material, I went with a cool pattern I found on RBTR... .9 oz MEMBRANE 15 Poly Taffeta - Prym1 Camo for the top layer & got Dark Olive Argon 67 for the bottom layer & the Climashield from Dutchware. It really helped to draw out my pattern with measurements & write down the build procedure, so I could minimize messing anything up. I sewed it all up with dark olive thread & it came out pretty good, although I did goof on a couple of things. When I flipped the quilt right side out, I discovered I had sewn both drawstring channels in backwards & had the calendared side out. I wound up seam ripping & redoing the head end channel but didn't bother with the foot end. Another goof was I used a doubled up piece of Climashield for the draft collar & I think a single layer would have been sufficient. If I decide to make the switch to a single layer, I'll redo the foot end drawstring channel at the same time. Overall, I'm pleased with how it turned out & it wasn't terribly challenging.

    Material List

    • 3 yds. - .9 oz MEMBRANE 15 Poly Taffeta - Prym1 Camo
    • 3 yds. - Argon 67 Dark Olive
    • 3 yds. - Climashield APEX 2.5
    • 1/16" Shock Cord
    • Finished dimensions - 78" L X 52" W (42" at foot end)

Top Quilt Material Laid Out; Prym1 Camo, Argon 67 & Climashield Sandwich

Top Quilt With 5" Taper Cut

    Top Quilt With Draft Collar

    Threading The Drawstring

    Finished Top Layer

    Finished Inside Layer

    Prym1 Camo Pattern

The completed quilt weighs in at 14 oz. on the button. My son & I are headed out this weekend up to AR & I'm anxious to see how it performs... temps are going to be in the 40's. Can't wait!

Nice! I just converted an old down bag into a top quilt and cutting the hood off, even sewing double lines to keep the down in the hood, I learned I do NOT want to deal with down! Let someone else make those. If I want to make a TQ I will go Climashield as well.

Agree on not dealing with down. Tried it and my garage looked like I had been slaughtering chickens! I will gladly pay the cottage vendors to deal with down!!!

    Great looking finished product.

Down isn't too awful as long as you keep the breeze from blowing and inform your better half that you are about to make a massive mess of down clusters.

The value the cottage companies provide on down gear is just too good to pass up though.

    This turned out well!

Wishing I would have skipped the zipper and added the draft collar on my Apex TQ. Let us know how it performs on your trip.
