    Question Long-Term Outdoor Suspension Options

I'm looking to put up a hammock under a covered porch. The connection points are too high to reach. I want to install either rope or chain to hang down low enough that i can take a hammock and clip the ends on with caribiners.

What sort of suspension materials can be used for long-term outdoor use? They need to be:

    - UV resistant
    - Low-stretch
    - Not ugly (that is: preferably not chain)
    - Working load strong enough to hold a hammock, obviously.

Initial research indicates 1/2" polyester might be a good option.

    Thoughts?

Chain is ugly? Heavy duty straps should work but these are more ugly than a chain to me.

Yep, I use chain on all my permanent hangs, out doors and indoors. No slip, ever.
If you prepare for failure you will probably succeed.

Another option could be stainless steel cable made into a dogbone.

for chain, make sure you get a welded link chain and bring your carabiner to the store to make sure you will be able to attach.
Something like the welded 4/0 straight chain from Tractor Supply has a working limit of 640 lbs.

Welded link chain, I don’t remember the weight rating, but way stronger than it needs to be. The Home Depot has a good selection. Steel shackles are there as well.

Why not amsteel/dyneema rope? It's strong, low-stretch, and has good UV resistance. As for ugliness, it looks like...rope.

I second the amsteel. I make a loop on one end and bury the other end, Then I larkshead that loop around whatever, like a heavy duty lag bolt on a wall stud (with a washer), turtle dog stand, Tensa stand. Very easy to remove. I use loop aliens on all my hammocks so it is always a very simple connection, though I hear knots work really well!

I read that amsteel is so-so for UV protection. This setup will be outdoors in the full sun for years.

I wonder which would last longer "in the full sun for years." The material of the hammock body? Or some amsteel rope?
