    12' Hammock Questions

I have been sleeping for 4 months now in my 11' DIY hammock and love it. Will a 12' DIY hammock give me a noticeable flatter lay that it would be worth it to try ? I tried the DIY Bridge hammock for a week and I am just not liking that flat of a lay.

What is the shortest span I can use with a 12' hammock ? I think I have 14 or 15' in the spare bedroom between walls. Everybody talks about the 30 degree hang angle but that may be hard to hit with only a foot or two on each end.

    Thanks for the help

If you’re tall a 12’ hammock can give you a significantly flatter lay.

I use a 12’x72”hammock. My SRL is 126” plus 1 foot for CL’s. That’s 136” total length. You can knock about 6” off that if you do a 83% SRL. It is a flat hammock. Especially with the STL stretched out a bit. At least for me. It would be nice to see a 12’ chameleon. Simply light designs has a 12’ trail lair that has some good reviews. I’m only 5’11” so an 11’ hammock is real comfortable also for me, but I would guess that the 12’ would probably be a bit more comfy for a 6’ person or taller.

I dont think going from 11' to 12' makes a big difference.

If its for outdoors, it actually becomes a problem because the hammock is longer than most tarps.

If its for indoors, go as long as possible, but measure it before you do.

A 12' hammock will have a ridgeline of approximately 10'. You can realistically hang in a space maybe 8" longer than the ridgeline (to account for the continuous loops) if you attach them directly to the wall.

Will the extra length give you more comfort? There is a lot that factors into that answer. Your height, the fabric(specifically, the amount of stretch), the sag(set by the length of your ridgeline), your body's physiology, etc.

My (unproven) theory is that maximum comfort is attained with a hammock body that is 2x your height I've only ever been 5'11" while hammocking, so it's hard to prove this theory.

I have an indoor 18’ span. My custom diy hammock is 18’ long with short whoopies and biners.
    60” + wide fabric.
Comfort is king. This basically ruined other hammocks for me.

To each their own, so they say. I made a 12ft by 7ft hammock several years ago. I have used it for lounging but was never able to get really comfortable in it. 11ft by 58 inch is my perfect fit.
If you prepare for failure you will probably succeed.

This post made me pull out the 12 and sleep in it last night. I don’t sleep any better in the 12 than I do the DL wide chameleon. The fabric is key I think.

Do you know the calculator? http://theultimatehang.com/hammock-hang-calculator/
It helps to figure out if and how a hammock can be set up between two walls.
