Durability of Cinch Bug with 7/64 Amsteel

Hi guys, just switched to a setup like this on my hennessy hammock:

Do any of you have any experience with this kind of setup? At first glance it looks to me like over time this would wear a lot on the Amsteel, potentially snapping it, leaving you on the cold ground in the middle of the night

    Thoughts?

I've experimented with similar (Dutch Beetle Buckles) and did hang on them a few nights with no problems. However I did worry about the lack of chamfering on the corners, but people seem to use them with no issues. If there were negative experiences I think we would see more references to them.

But if this were my long-term rig I think I would file and smooth those corners. Maybe unnecessary, but just for peace of mind.

A little wear is inevitable over time. Rotate(?) the CL from time to time to put a fresh section on the hardware. Change out the CLs when you see enough wear to worry you. Carry extra CLs just in case! CLs are cheap, easy to re-adjust/replace.

Sigh.. Seems like this suspension setup is also far from ideal. I'm just looking for a no-fuss, easily adjustable setup..

I use Beetle Buckles with my tandem set up and change out the CLs every other year because they start to fray.

Like it was said before, Amsteel is cheap and CLs can be made in minutes.

Why give up on it? Just because some part of it may someday possibly wear out maybe?

I'm a full-time hanger, and I have been using Beetle Buckles with 1/8" Amsteel c/l for about 1-1/2 years now. No signs of wear on the amsteel, no issues with the buckles, no slipping, no signs of wear on the straps.

I have been using these for a few years
    I hang I'd say 100 nights a year
    Zero issues
Every other year or if I see any wear I replace the c.l.
    I'm 280lbs
    Love this setup

For “no fuss” you can’t beat a daisy chain (climbing term - commercial hammock products are ENO Atlas Straps or Kammok Python straps. There are now very lightweight choices from Dutchware) and carabiner. Wrap around the tree and clip into a loop. The downside - the loops often give a 5 or 6 inch step and you may want to adjust half of that. The solution (a complication?) Just have an extra 6-8 inch loop you can double and add to the carabiner-daisy chain connection. That moves it about half a step distance. No knots, no sliding, no slipping, no falling off hardware. Some may say they only want to adjust an inch or inch and a half. My body hasn’t been that particular.

All that said, I may go back to straps this summer just for a change. Most my early gear (Atlas and Python straps) is heavier that what’s available now. I’m kicking and screaming towards the UL world. I don’t think I’ll completely embrace it, but I do respect it.
In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.
