    Lazy man’s DIY CDT Underquilt

Two Costco down throw blankets clipped to the hammock with binder clips as an underquilt. My son slept in this last night. It got down to 45°F with 5-10 mph winds. He used a 25°F comfort sleeping bag and wore mid-weight base layers.

He said he was nice and warm most of the night but got a slight chill on the underside around 5 a.m. but was able to keep sleeping until 8.

I have done this in the summer with a single blanket which worked fine, but I was quite skeptical that this would work. Pretty surprised that for the most part he was warm enough.

We used 4 binder clips per side (8 total). They have held ok, but I’d like to find something that holds a little bit stronger. You do have to be a little bit careful when entering and exiting the hammock not to dislodge the clips.

He’s going to try again tonight. It’s supposed to be a bit colder with a projected low of 39°, so we will see...

Looks nice! I have made an UQ with them too for my gathered end hammocks. I have 2 suggestions to make it warmer:

Use a seam ripper ($3) to rip out the horizontal stitches. This will give it way more loft.

    Either:
    1) Offset the 2 layers so that the vertical seams are not on top of each other, as they create cold spots due to no insulation.

    2) RIP not the horizontal seams but the vertical seams on the 2nd layer so the seams are perpendicular to each other, minimizing cold spots

A draft probably entered at the ends. They must be cinched somehow

Yeah, I should probably stop being so lazy and at least rip the seams.

At this point I’m not too interested in permanently attaching a suspension system or a cinch for the ends.

He slept in it again last night and it got down to 37°F. Like the night before, he woke up around 5 or 6 with a slight chill, curled up in a ball and was able to fall asleep again until 8 or 9.

I did my best to snug the ends up with him in the hammock, but there was definitely still a gap. I asked if he could notice or if he suspected drafts getting between the hammock and the quilts. He wasn’t sure, but guessed that it was just because it was the coldest time of day.

A chill that slight could probably be eliminated with the seam ripper. I like the idea of perpendicular lines. Horizontal on one and vertical on the other. I bet your son would even do it. It’s a tv watching activity.
Get lost in the woods and find yourself again. A vacation,to me, is working with your hands and surviving because of the fruits of your labor. In the business world I teach;in the natural world I learn.

As a non-permanent solution for the cinching the ends up, try wrapping them with some lightweight elastic/bungee cord. Wrap it loosely, just enough to cinch it up, but loose enough to allow for some give.

I think you will find that just closing those ends up even a little will make a world of difference for him.

Might have to try something like that. Thanks for the tip!
