Attach Reflective Loop to Shepherds Hooks

    Howdy Hammockers.

Anyone have a way to attach a piece of cord to Shepherds hooks? I have a nasty habit of losing them, lost one just yesterday in my own yard, so I wanted to try and tie a pole of glowire to one to help me both locate them if my guy out come off and also as an attachment point for hook style tighteners. I remember seeing someone do this on a post but it was a couple of years ago and I can’t find it now.

    Thanks for any hints.

You could try wrapping the hook with reflective tape in some garish color.

Heat shrink tube or plasti-dip (think that’s what it’s called)

I would tie a loop and use a prusik knot https://www.animatedknots.com/prusik-knot

    I've done it two ways...

On the Vargo Ti hooks I used a piece of heat shrink tube to capture the micro cord loop. It's held fine on all but one of six hooks I have done this on.

On the Lawson HD Ti hooks I did a simple whipping knot using Z-Packs reflective Z-Line. Haven't had a problem with any of these budging.

Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....

I was thinking a prussicks as well and landed on the Icicle Hitch. Seems to hold pretty well so far.

I think this is the photo I’ve seen before. I’ve tried whipping before and always end up messing it up. I need to practice it some more. Thank you!

If you go with knots, the Double Constrictor Knot is an obvious choice. It’s the classic way to tie a pencil to a clipboard.

I wouldn't expect a prussik to hold on the slippery smooth metal.. but who knows.

    Double constrictor is interesting.

I did 6 hooks last night, 3 with whipping and 3 with the double constrictor knot. Just from a tying perspective and a quick pull test I think I like the double constrictor a bit better. It uses less cordage, it’s easier to get both ends the same length, less bulk Du to not needing to pull the strand under the coil, and seems to lock down just as tightly as the whipping.
I put a quasi button knot on the end to try that method of connecting cord and I’m going to try out overnight.

Thanks for all of the input!
