I never had any direct interactions with Cowboy but I always appreciated his builds AND his detailed explanations of how he thought through the process and why.
I too remember this question being raised in the past and I also remembered some inclinations of collaborations with Dutch...so I emailed Dutch to find out. Here is his reply (and I did as for Dutch's permission - he granted it as I believe he is pretty busy converting their operation to making masks and gowns for our local hospital.)
"I spoke to him last fall and almost got to see him when I was out in Seattle. He was certainly not doing great but it keeps him off the
internet...So I think he is alive but not doing well and I don't expect to see him again on HF.
