Check out the book.. 50 Hikes in the Catskills by Derek Dellinger.
I have it downloaded on kindle version. It's pretty good. Has plenty (50) Hikes you can do. Good trail descriptions and levels of difficulty.. Day hikes or overnights.

Also.. Don't overlook Harriman State Park. There are plenty of nice trails thru there that you can loop or in and out.. Day hikes galore and overnighters too. Also will not be as strenuous as Catskills!!

For loops of just about any length imaginable, Harriman really is unbeatable. It's possible to stitch together 50 miles or more and never do the same trail twice.

You must camp near the shelters.

Technically, no, but it does happen a lot. Supposed to be in proximity of a shelter, but there are many other 'rogue' campsites that are used quite regularly.

I was there a couple of weeks ago and Bald Rocks shelter was still closed for a problem bear. I don't know current status.

Also, I'd imagine that there's a huge number of blowdowns after Isaias blasted through. I'm doing a hike/camp there tomorrow and coming back early Sunday so I can do an update on that. Heck, I might not get very far into the woods and be forced to bag it. Undergrowth is very dense in many places and passage can be impossible or a very nasty proposition at best.

I think that knocks echo lake out

Do you guys know of any good reading material that gives descriptions of trails in the catskills?

Echo lake trails are open..... the .6 miles down to the lake itself is pretty intense just because your walking down cobble stones the whole way..... your feet will definitely want to take a rest when you make it to the lean-to ...... my son and I camped out there a couple nights back in June..... we loved it!! We took a day hike to overlook Mtn and the abandoned hotel up there .... the only thing I was warned about Echo Lake was to be careful treading through the deep grass, I was told the rattlers like to hang out there....

There's a NYNJ Trail Conference book "Harriman Circuit Hikes" that has 3-4 hour easy to strenuous loop hikes. Several also pass by shelters, meaning you can camp near them if the "dispersed" option doesn't appeal to you. I really like a loop hike for a Sub 24 hour overnight. Leave work Friday afternoon, drive to the park, hike for an hour or so. Make camp, relax, eat, clear head. Sleep. Wake in the morning, eat and complete the loop. Then you're back home for lunch on Saturday. Yes, you're not packing on the miles but at least you're getting a night out under the stars.
