IL- DNR Announces Closure of all State Parks and Recreation Areas

Just found this out today. This is terrible news- as enjoying the outdoors is one of the safest things we can do during the COVID-19 pandemic- with regards to social distancing. The doctor at my clinic (who also has a Master's degree in Public Health) also agrees that this decision makes no sense from a preventative standpoint. Unfortunately, it does not look like we will be able to do much hammock camping in Illinois in the near future- at least not in state-run areas.

I apologize to the mods if this thread violates the rules in any way. But I felt that this is information that ought to be shared- as it impacts many hammock campers on our forum. I wouldn't be surprised if other states follow-suit as well (if they haven't already).

Good to share! Some people plan a day in advance, some several weeks or months.

Since when does an IL government decision make any sense

This is unfortunate, we had a few hangs in the works down that way

I agree. The collective "freak out" is a bit much, IMO!

Cross your fingers that other states will choose to keep their parks open and encourage gatherings to use common sense discretion by remaining small. "Something, something...we will all hang together or we'll all hang separately."

PA got this one right! PA parks and Forrests are open but NO facilities. You can hike, walk, or do dispersed backpacking.

The WI Department of Natural Resources has announced today that our state parks and trails will stay open to the public for now.

However, all campsites are closed through April. In addition, park headquarters, offices, visitor centers, nature centers, research stations, ranger stations, shooting ranges, fish hatcheries, shelters, showers, concessions, and indoor group camp buildings on all DNR owned properties are closed.

But...restrooms on state properties will remain open given there are enough resources, cleaning supplies and access to personal protective equipment for staff to maintain them.

In short, you can fish, hunt, hike, and poop until someone says you can't.
