.77 MTan silnylon tie out reinforcement

I’ve got some of the .77oz MTN sil to play with. I can’t find much about others using it. It’s surprisingly strong, and seems to have less stretch then .9 membrane silpoly. It definitely stretches some on the bias, but warp and weft seems solid. I’ll be curious to see how it sags when wet.

I’m debating on how to attach the reinforcements. Thoughts on just sewing them on, vs laminating them like the membrane silpoly method? I’m guessing the ripstop grid stabilizes the fabric enough that it shouldn’t get the hole elongation issue when under tension?

I would laminate/glue radial reinforcements on and use a minimal amount of stitching to lock it in

Second bonding them on. I did an asym in membrane 1.0 and bonded all the corner reinforcements and pullouts. Very easy to do, no pin holes to seam seal. very strong.
Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....

Ya. That was my thinking. I’ve done a membrane tarp. Laminating the reinforcements on wasn’t hard. Slightly messy, but the finish was clean.

I made cardboard templates about a quarter inch larger than the patch I was applying, made it easy to apply just the right amount of silicone, and get the placement of the patch correct...

Did you apply silicone to both the tarp and the reenforcement piece before laminating?

    I did not.

Applied it to the tarp, let it set for a few minutes so it flowed flat and laid the reinforcement patch on. Gently squeezed any bubble out to the edge with my fingers. Care is needed here or the patch will slide out of position with too much pressure. Last, I made sure the very edges of the patch was sandwiched between silicone.

BTW.. I used mineral spirits to dilute the Seam Seal 3:1.. about the consistency of olive oil.

Thank you for the info MikekiM.
How did you mix such a small amount of Seam seal and mineral spirits? Can you mix a "batch" and then just save the unused portion?

I used a 10 ounce drink cup.. plastic only. Mineral spirits will eat through Styrofoam.

I squeezed about a half dollar size wad of seam sealer (enough to cover the bottom of the cup) and slowly added mineral spirits to it until I got to the desired consistency. You're spreading it on evenly and fairly thin (I used small glue brushes.. about $69 each in the hardware or Harbor Freight sells them by the bag).

You can't save it so what you don't use will cure in the cup. Throw it away.
