    Hammock hot tent information

Hi everyone. I am a 3 season hammocker who just got into winter hot tent camping this year ( I live in Ontario ).
I am considering building a hammock hot tent from silnylon. My concerns are fireproofing the tarp, condensation issues, and suspension systems. I also am considering a secondary "fly" over the top to reduce any pin holes from sparks in the silnylon.
I am open to all information and suggestions
    Thx in advance
    Kelly

Hey Shug......much appreciated. It was great seeing you on the podcast. I've seen several of his shows and I told EVERYONE I knew that you were on. I'm familiar with wawhiker. I will definitely look at the links you sent.
    Cheers

This guy has some great ideas.
And would reduce chance of sparks for you if you use a long pipe.

Definitely. I just started last winter and it's great! My pipe is 3" diameter and originally 9' long (10' above ground after stove). So I cut it down to about 8', which is still 9' above ground and 3' over the highest point on my roof. No sparks or burn holes at all, but I do also have a spark arrestor. Even without that, I don't think I would be worried. I like it a lot more than the side exit chimneys a lot of people do. Better draft, efficient, and almost NO smoke. Others are pumping out thick white smoke...maybe just dampened down too much?

Condensation is going to happen since you can't really run a stove all night. You can try, but you'll probably realize it's more work than it's worth. In this case, just let the stove burn out while going to sleep or a little after. You can unzip a door or two for some air flow. I found it to have a lot less condensation than expected, even on my 30-35° snowy trip...that was it for 3 days straight!

I have the 1.9 fire retardant material, which I love. Nice heavy duty feel and substantial for winter trips. But I personally don't think there's anything wrong with a non-FR material. The "shrink wrap yourself" thing is a myth. You can melt it and ruin a trip if you are careless with a stove...but I don't think it's going up in flames anytime soon with a little common sense.

For the hammock suspension, a 3-slider zipper system works great. Just unzip as much room as you need and feed it through.

I use a Smokehouse Outfitter. Couldn't be happier!!!
