    Question Top quilt footbox question.

I got a small bonus at work and I want to use use part of it to grab a quality top quilt. I currently have a sleeping bag that the zipper broke on and I sewed a footbox into it.

I grabbed a used 20* HG underquilt and I'm thinking of the 30* Econ TQ to go with it. What I'm really wondering is what the pros cons of the sewn vs zipper footboxes are? Your thoughts?

    TB,

Congrats on the windfall. All my sleep gear is the HG Econ Line. Ive got a 10 degree set and a 30 degree set.

Do a search here and there is a really good thread on this with lots and lots of information.

BTW, sewn footbox for me. I think its warmer AND>>>> I am a bear on equipment. The snaps wouldnt last long with me.

    Have a good weekend.

I believe the theory is that sewn is warmer, and it makes sense. However, when cinched down properly, I believe the difference is minimal.

Zipped footboxes offer easy venting and (I believe) easier, more thorough airing out when the TQ is damp. Sewn have fewer points of failure.

Both are great. No worries with either.

Thanks all. That's what I was looking for. I'm generally 3 season right now and I keep a Costco down throw in my pack so I can always stuff it down there of need be. So I'll probably go with a zippered.

My first quilts were zippered foot boxes. I wanted the versatility of being able to open up the foot box and use it like a blanket... well, I never did. On the other hand, the shock cord always bugged me when the foot box was cinched up. Minor annoyance, for sure. But really prefer sewn foot boxes now that I know how I use quilts.

Like I said... minor annoyance, not a deal breaker at all for me. You’ll end up with a great piece of gear either way

I've never had any reason to unzip my Topquilts. First 2 I bought were EE Revelations for 20 and 40 degree and were zippered because thought I'd use the feature. Never did...my 0 degree TQ is EE Enigma with sewn footbox and my feet are comfy.

I had one snapped foot box on DIY CDT TQ, and found it more annoying than anything else. Never opened it intentionally, but popped the snaps open a bunch of times. Since I use Halfwit style big nets most of the time, securely covering my legs is critical.. no gaps please!!

Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....

The sewn foot box is definitely warmer for me - which could be a feature or a bug depending upon the nighttime temperature. Occasionally, if I move around a bit, I might create enough pressure to undo one snap along the length of my HG TQ. The bungee cord/cinch at the foot end seldom gets changed/adjusted. Having the cinch at the foot of my HG allows for more ventilation options. Having the sewn footbox of the UGQ means it's a warm as can be for a bag that's designed to be used in winter.
In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.

I agree with these guys. I have the HG top quilt with a zipper foot box. I never ever open it up. It unzips itself

The sewn foot box is lighter, but I think the warmth is about the same, as long as you plug the hole. On my 40 degree quilt, I have a zippered foot box and I do like to open it up on warm summer nights. My colder temp quilts are all sewn.
