Thanks Latherdome for your suggestions, and your stand is perfect the way it is. I just like to modify things way too much, which I think of as fun. I guess it is time to have some sewing machine fun! At least I will not permanently damage my stand to begin with.

So far I like the new color, but this is not a fair comparison. The aluminum stand reflects its suroundings very well and in the picture it is reflecting snow. In the woods it would reflect the trees instead making it darker.

I made the snakeskins out of some dark olive, lightweight waterproof fabric, that is probably 1.4 Sil nylon from Dutchware. I cut the material at 6 1/2" x 3 yards. I sewed a 3/8 seam longways, just simply double stitched with no rolled seam, and it fits just right over all parts of the stand. I would not recommend making it smaller in diameter, though I suppose I could sew a third stitch on the upper half to taper the top. Also, I just used the "zipper pouch" method to box in the top and I roll hemmed the bottom. I used a soldering iron to open the holes at the top, which I thought worked good enough. They pack small and they will be useful where I plan to hammock this year.
