    Restringing underquilts shock cord

My eight year old shock cord busted the elastic in one section of shock cord. The sheath did not break, but the inner stretchy part broke in one place.
    Dutch to the rescue
Dutch got me some 1/8 shock cord and all I had to do was restring underquilt.

Previously I had restrung my zero degree underquilt. I overlapped new and old cords about 8 inches and bound them together with fishing line. It was tough, but I managed to pull the new through channels by pulling on old shock cord that was tied to new with fishing line.

There had to be a better way.
First I looked for a safety pin and could not find the one I had. Just as well, I had visions of it coming undone in channel and damaging my underquilt.

    Solution: No Knots, No Hardware!
I just pushed shock cord into channel and it trained right through the tunnel.
Then about 3/4 way through, the friction became too much and it stopped. Then I was able to grab near the front or lead end of cord and inchworm it’s way through until it emerged from other side. Mission complete!
    Also thanks Mooseman!

For narrow channels like the one you had to work with, I use a plastic needlepoint needle. Looks like a leather needle, about three inches long, but has a blunt tip and really big eye.. big enough to thread amsteel through if needed. The blunt tip keeps it from poking into the fabric and slides smoothly in the channel. You can also use a large paper clip but threading the shock cord through the clip, and using a piece of masking tape to tape the shock cord to itself and temporarily close the loop.

For big channels, like the ends of hammocks, I use a giant paper clip. I mean GIANT! I found it in a business supply store and it's kind of a gag item. But if my memory is serving me well, I think Papa Smurf used the same thing in one of his videos.
Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....

    Thanks MikekiM
Your way works better than mine, although I got it done after wrinkling my grizzled brow.

If it gets done either way, none is better than the other!!

New shock cord transforms old quilts...I couldn't believe the difference.
