I built a hammock stand (pergola).

Ive been wanting to figure out a way to hang in my back yard for about a year. I was anchoring to my sons swing set and then to the house. It was a terrible angle because it was a 41' stretch. As you all know its very difficult to sleep well when your angle is so wrong. I wanted to just put two posts in the ground but the wife wasn't having it. It took me a while to work it out but I finally thought about a pergola after seeing a few pictures on the interweb. Ive always thought pergola's were kind of dumb. They're some of the most useless structures I can think of. Whats the point in having a roof if you still get rained on? Anyways, I proceeded to convince my wife it would increase our home value and it would look good and all that good stuff. The final result was the most expensive hammock stand I could imagine. After I got it built, I told my wife "You know, I can put eye hooks in the posts and hang my hammock". She said, "Great Idea!!!!" Now that the pergola is a hammock stand, I no longer believe they're useless. I love them.

Clever. I like how you think. You even have a small fire pit. Very well played!!!

Pergolas provide mid-day shade if the top pieces are close enough, tall enough, and oriented in the right direction. They also make great trellises, if you're so inclined. An alternative, if you want rain protection, is a clear polycarbonate roof...

You could have just used straps, save you “spoiling the aesthetics” with the eyebolts.
    Great job!

You can put acrylic across the top if you want an actual roof. That's how i did mine. You can get opaque for shade, clear for sun, or shaded/UV-blocking for a compromise.

I love this! Lol. Nice work - it looks beautiful! I put a post up so I can hang 3 hammocks now, although it doesn’t look nearly as nice as this. My boyfriend even helped me dig the post hole.

That sort of thing makes us feel manly and indispensable.
