NJ > Batona Camp > 13th Annual New Jersey Winter Hang > January 24th-26th, 2020

Trip report placeholder for the 13th installment of the NJ Winter Hang.

I'll try to post a better recap later tonight

    The short version:

    • Attendance was light
    • People were likely scared off by the promise of rain
    • It indeed did rain - a lot - from around 7am until around 2pm on Saturday and then it cleared out into a beautiful night
    • SilvrSurfr and Stalker were both absent, so it was eerily quiet in the woods for much of Friday evening ...
    • It was low key, laid back, but we still had a great time like always

Well, here's my pathetic excuse for missing the 13th Annual NJ Winter Hang:

It took me three hours to cook a pot of chili and a bunch of salsa verde on Thursday night. Friday, I loaded up the chili, salsa verde, bacon and eggs and hit the road. My car started making a loud squealing noise, so halfway down Route 70, only 30 minutes from Batona Camp, I decided I had to turn back. I did not want my car to die in the middle of the Pine Barrens. The emergency light was on, the radio stopped working and it was just too scary for me.

I finally got to see my mechanic today, and he said there was some kind of belt failing - not a critical item. It was not the emergency light that was blinking - it was a tire pressure sensor (should have read the manual). The radio was not working because I had a battery replaced the day before and the idiot had the terminals reversed and probably blew a fuse (or worse, fried the radio). So I probably could have made it to Batona Camp and back. Instead, now I have the stain of a P-47 Chowhound move on my record - and I'm just about 100% positive P47-Chowhound pulled another P-47 Chowhound move and didn't show up after saying he would.

Sorry I missed it, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Did not expect to be able to attend, made it for a portion of the hang, mostly night time. Did a bunch of wandering at morning and at night.

Sun morning was a beautiful blue sky that was wiped away by a wall of clouds. Enjoyed watching the rising sun clear the tops of the trees and light up the far side of the field while the mist burned off. The sunlit golden leading edge of the clouds caught my eye.

But the clouds did win the day.

Just the phone camera in HDR and then filter mayhem using snapseed app.

Be aware, it’s a google app.

Thanks! Yep, me too, was not expected.

Gave the dog and I a chance to “climb” Mt Korbar aka Teatime Hill. Always nice to bag a Pinebarrens peak while walking, had to be a solid 26ft of elevation change. Lol
