Lightbulb Ultralight Hammockers - Give us your wisdom.

    Ultralight hammockers,

    I know you're out there.

Being that HF is THE defacto hammock gossip site, this is where folks who want to know more about hammocks, come to find out more about hammocks.

Given that the rest of the interwebs doesn't have a huge amount of information combining hammocking and UL efforts, what more appropriate place than here?

All of you diehard gram counters (of which I am helplessly becoming one):

What have you learned over the years to make your UL hammock ambitions a success?

What gear do you recommend that is uber lite and reliable?

How has UL hammocking been different or harder than UL tenting?

How light have you gotten your shelter/sleep/insulation kit?

I know that most folks here don't focus on the weight, they come here for comfort.

To those of you who do, how did you keep the comfort and still shed carried weight?

DCF, tiny tarps, lightest weight cordage, ¾ length quilts. 950fp. Removable bugnet, tiny bugnets, less stuff, no stuff sacks, UL packs, UL fabrics. Less stuff. Same as traditional UL.

No difference really. DCF tarps, 10—15 denier fabrics for quilts at highest fill power available. Under quilts of 3/4 length with sit pad under your feet. Dynaglide suspension and Kelvar tree straps, if your weight is

    No carabiners, obviously.

In addition to the excellent foundation mentioned above: know your food. This is where many will over pack. Keep track of how many calories you need and try to ration or plan as close as you can. How many times have you come home with 3 granolas bars, 3/4 a sack of GORP or all those extra snacks you threw in at the last moment that never got eaten.

Watch your clothing, really learn how to layer for your temp comforts and how to double up functions on clothing items: clothing for a pillow, rain jacket as an extra layer etc. Its amazing how disgusting you can get on the trail and not really care (unless you're through hiking). I never have more than one pair of pants I use during the day and then appropriate dry sleep pants for around camp, generally a pair of fleece. Same with a shirt, one for the hiking, one for camp / sleeping. Socks are the only extra clothing I will bring.

Do #2 before going hiking to cut a ton of weight:
    1 pound
The average poop weighs around 1/4 pound to 1 pound. Larger people who eat and drink more, or people who have less-regular bowel movements, have heavier poops. It takes an average of 33 hours for food to be processed into poop and pass out of your body.Mar 15, 2018

Folks, Please keep this on the topic of hammocks and not the other items in your packs (food, stoves, etc) or this thread will get moved to the Donating Member area which will do the OP no good. Thank you!

UL hammock setup can be just as comfortable as any other. I know mine is.

My lightest combo for warmer weather is 2.56 lb, which includes hammock (Half Wit 1.0 hexon), suspension (12ft 1.9 Kevlar straps), tarp (HG Hex,DCF, incl guylines and stakes) and both 50deg TQ and 40deg UQ, both EE. There are some combos out there using LL Operator and some other quilts that are a bit lighter.

Pic of exact setup as described above:

    Ultralight but not stupid light:

A half-zip hammock like the Dream Hammock Darien, using the lightest fabric that will support your weight (for most men, that DH option is 1.3oz MTN XL Hybrid), #3 zipper.

Quilts with the lightest fabrics (7D ripstop from Enlightened Equipment) and highest fill power down, suited for the expected temperatures.

12' UHMWPE straps like Dynaweave or Spider-Web, becket hitch on continuous loops.

    Knots instead of hardware.

Dyneema tarp with full coverage. IMO asym tarps fall under "stupid light."

MSR Groundhogs. Don't f* around with your stakes.

This is a Lot of great feedback.

I know it may be considered off topic, but I do appreciate all of the feedback which gives a holistic look in regards to gear, etc...
