    Superfly 20d

    Hi all!

I have a question for anyone who has a silpoly 20d Superfly (or any large tarp made with 20d silpoly for that matter).

I'm about to pull the trigger on a Superfly...I like the camo print but the "silnylon is a good bit more durable" info in the fabric section on the warbonnet website makes me hesitate. I'm aware of the water absorption difference etc. I've been stuck out out some pretty bad weather in tents over the years, but since I've been hammock camping, I haven't been caught out in anything too crazy. The last thing I want to do is to pick a tarp fabric for the pattern and have it fail when I need it most.

That being said, I can't find any examples of folks who have said that the 20d fabric hasn't held up for them in normal use so....

Has anyone actually experienced any kind of failure with the 20d silpoly that they think a 30d silnylon tarp would have held up in?

Thanks for any input, I appreciate it!

I had an olive silpoly superfly that was taken out by a falling branch. Currently using the camo one and like it very much. I wholeheartedly recommend them. the center pole mod is totally worth it as well. I wouldn't get a silnylon tarp, I had one as a ground dweller and wouldn't go back.

Here is this past weekend in sleet and freezing rain with some moderate wind gusts and no issues.

The durability is fine by me. Just as good as the nylon I used for years. But I must have gotten a "bad roll" or something. Mine seem to a absorb a ton of water and do not shed droplets like the nylon.

    Thanks for the feedback!

It seems like most or all of the tarp manufacturers who have silpoly models are using 20d or even 15d...

I think I'll go for the 20d camo and hope for the best.

I like my Superfly 20 d just fine and am shocked at how compact it is in the pack compared to a DCF tarp.

Im in the same boat. Im waiting on a 20d silpoly tarp now. I dont really trust its durability although Ive never used silpoly. Im just going off of what ive heard (Its not as durable as silnylon). I currently have a 30d silnylon and a dyneema tarp and ive grown to trust both of them. I pulled the trigger on the 20d silpoly and im hoping for the best just like you.

IMO, 20D ripstop silpoly is plenty durable for a tarp. It stands up fine to any winds I've encountered, isn't bothered by average hailstorms, and can withstand a substantial snow load. For that matter, it also sheds snow really well, as you can kind of see in this photo.

    Superfly 20d

I'm quite happy with my 20d silpoly Superfly. I much prefer it to my older silnylon tarp. I had it in all-night showers a few weekends ago, and it stayed nice and taught all night.

3A3E7B2E-6709-487D-ADD0-778B83671EEA.jpeg I’ve been happy with my 20d sil poly Superfly so far. No issues and although I’m as careful as possible stuff happens. Snow, ice, falling branches have all happened but so far so good.

I received my 20d tarp Friday and tried it out this weekend. Its not a superfly but its a 1.1 oz 20d silpoly. I like it. Its weird but in-hand it feels like it would be more durable than silnylon. My silnylon superfly is extremely thin and slippery. The silpoly feels more stiff, nowhere near as slippery and actually feels like it could handle more abuse.
