We have a lot of mossy ground. As such, I have an assortment of stakes that have failed me. Shepherd hooks, both thin and thick, V stakes and groundhogs have all betrayed me in the heavy moss. I have purchased a set of nine inch screw stakes form aliexpress. I hope these will perform well when I test them this friday. I usually resort to sticks. 1 inch circumference and about ten inch length.

I carry stakes in a plastic disposable water bottle, in hopes of not poking holes in my gear.
The cheap aluminum round Walmart stakes, called shepherd hooks?
They sometimes stay in pack and I tie out tarp corner lines to trees, bushes. This makes a sloppy setup for me, but with high winds, it’s less likely to have a tree get pulled from ground than a stake.
I have used large rocks or large logs to secure tarp lines, with a sturdy stick two to three feet long. Tarp guy line is spiral coiled around sturdy stick that is laid on ground and weighted down with large rock. When packing up, remove large rock and pull tarp guy line up and spiral wrapped sturdy stick unrolls itself.

    This ^^^^^^

I don't do it often, but this is the easiest way to find the lone stake in the dark. I do have reflective tethers on them which helps as well.

So these new stakes, which allows for very easy tightening and re-tightening of the guy lines, might just be perfect.

Those look interesting.. First I seeing them. Very Dutch-like. Way too pricey for me though..

I keep tethers on all of my stakes, including the HD Shephard hooks.. I use reflective z-line for the tether and tie a simple, tight whipping knot right at the crook of the hook. Then tie a diamond knot so I have something to grab. The tether has never come off, so I would expect you could do the same with your guy lines, depending on your choice of cord, and have similar results.

Thanks for the tip. Any suggestions on how to tie a whipping knot? And how long do you make your tether?

It would certainly be easier to leave the cord on my tarp than rolling up on the stakes.

I always like these guyout threads for the mention of rocks. When I'm setting up I sometimes laugh and think to myself "what is this rock they speak of?"

I was forced to answer that question last year. First time to happen in many years, but I unrolled my tarp and to my horror discovered that the stakes weren't there!

Opps...at least you had backup. I've used that same trick with sticks and rocks when the soil had zero holding power.

The nice thing about that is just pulling the line and packing up in the morning.

My OCD does not allow for muddy stakes back into the pouch, so there I am squatting down wiping off stakes with leaves or moss.

Don't over think this one...Common Whipping Knot..

Here is how I do them on my Mini Ground Hogs..

    And the shepherd hooks...

Tie them really tight. If they slip, put a dab of CA on the whipping.

Raises his hand... totally with you on this one. Can't lie.

Thanks. I’ve never tied one so I didn’t know if there were different types.

And ditto on the clean stakes part. One of the few things I dislike about groundhogs.
