    First attempt at splicing zing-it

I am making my own hammock soon, so I need a fixed ridgeline. Instead of my usual "find somewhere to buy one" attitude, I decided to look into this splicing thing. I didn't even know what "splicing" was until years into hanging. I figured it was too complicated and gave up before even trying.

So I got some galvanized wire from the garage and a scrap piece of zingit. EASY!!!! Again, why did I wait so long? This is actually fun!

First rushed attempt actually turned out perfect! I went a little overboard on the bury length though. Now on to a long piece of my hammock!

Good for you! It is fun and gratifying.

I go so long between projects that I have to re-watch how-to vids to remind me how

Be careful! This DIY thing is habit forming.

With Zing it, I find a plastic canvas needle is helpful. Not sure what that the sewing/craft store associates will help.

Looking forward to seeing your new projects.

Stripped old telephone wire is also great for zing it, most of us have this unused somewhere in our homes.

Ive been bitten by the bug too. This weekend I went to walmart and found a pack of yarn darner needles that worked perfectly. They keep in a pack or 8 I believe but there was one that was the perfect fit.

Howd you do the brummel splice at both ends?

The cost savings are phenomenal, but more so is the gratification and ease at being able to throw something together on a whim specific to the project on hand.

This is my splicing kit (less knife) and does everything from 1.75mm zing-it to 1/8" amsteel. No special tools required.

The only down side being.... you've got a box full of various amsteel, the, "I feel like splicing something" itch hits, but you can't think of anything you can possibly use at the moment. It's very frustrating.

Just as a suggestion, you might consider doing an adjustable (ie., UCR SRL). I know you can do the math and get within a fairly comfortable range, but every hammock is going to lay a little different. Being able to bump it up or down a few inches can make a big difference. Once you get a few nights into it and have it dialed in then you can either lock off the UCR or switch it out for a custom length fixed SRL.

Normally I like having options, but everything I've ever used (about 10 hammocks over 8 years) had a fixed and it was perfect. I don't wanna start messing with stuff now.

I like using a weaving needle for splicing Zing-it. Works fine on Amsteel, too.
