How far do you think you’ll get on your first day? Western Germany near the Dutch or French border or closer to Hannover? There are campgrounds along the way or you could ask the district Forest care taker (Förster) for permission.
Would it be easier to take a ferry to Hamburg and sleep on the boat?
Sound like a great trip though, enjoy.

I’ll be stopping overnight in Lille, France, with relatives, then driving North in the morning. It’s not a race to Sweden so I expect to be around the Hannover area for an overnight hang with my lad

My family owns a small forest about 15 minutes from the Autobahn A2 near Hannover/ Garbsen. It’s really small and I haven’t been there in over 20 years. I will ask my uncle if you can use it. There is also a campground right off the A2 Exit for Garbsen. From either place it’s about 3 hours to the Danish border. I have another relative with a forest near the A7 which leads North to Denmark but it’s very close to the Autobahn and the airport. I don’t think you’d get much sleep there. Feel free to PM me if you’d like to use our forest or need anything else. Plan a trip to New Hampshire next time we are the Live Free or Die State it’s much easier to find a spot up here
