    Adding Tarp Pullouts

During my backpacking trip over New Year's and on my first night out, I staked the tarp corner tie outs low to the ground to help keep potential wind & rain off my dog while he slept under the hammock. In doing so, I lost a fair amount of room under the tarp due to the tarp side walls being more vertical than I normally prefer, so I've decided I'd like to try my hand at adding pullouts to the tarp.

The tarp material is Xenon 1.1 and I plan on using the same material or maybe Xenon .9 for the pullouts. The thing I'm wondering about is whether to sew them on or glue them on. For the adhesive I've considered contact cement which when bonded, makes a strong, permanent bond. If I sew the pullouts on the sidewalls it'll add a little weight, plus I'll have to seam seal everything.

I've done searches here & have a fair idea of the direction I want to go with this but would appreciate any feedback from those who have tackled the job, i.e., pros & cons of one method over the other, other adhesives to consider, circular vs. rectangle, helpful hints, etc.

    What say ye?

You want to add aditional tarp space? Or anchor points for guy lines?

    Bond them on.

Create your reinforcement patches. I make circles for panel pulls, using a circle cutter. Then sew the grosgrain (with or without hardware) to the reinforcement patch. Then bond the patch to the side panel. No needle holes to seam seal and much easier than trying to manipulate all the tarp fabric so you can sew in the middle of the side panel.

Make a template for the area you want to apply the seam sealer to, brush it on, and then lay the reinforcement patch and gently smooth out air bubbles. Works a charm!

Dig around in these two albums.. there are a bunch of picks of bonding the reinforcements...

I made a 12’ silpoly but have not added side pullouts yet. Looks like your pullouts are 10.5” in diameter. Am I reading that correctly?

10.5" ?? no way... panel pull reinforcements were 3.25"

I made two 12' tarps (one w/ doors one without). This pic is some of the reinforcement patches.. I think i have it filed in the wrong folder.
Bottom left are the door corners. middle are the ground corner tie outs. bottom right are the panel pulls for both tarps. Missing from this pic were the ridge tie outs.

Thanks for the tips MikekiM! I have a circle cutter coming in today, so this will be my on weekend project list.

Haha. I thought 10.5" was a little large for a panel pull reinforcement. I saw this pic in the album which is why I wanted to confirm.
