    Cold Weather Runny Nose

Well, I'm already grossed out after typing that title. But there it is—my latest problem. I get a runny nose in the cold. I don't think I *have* a cold; this just happens in the cold. I worry that this could cause a very unpleasant outcome in my hammock if I fall asleep and can't sniffle every few seconds. My poor (new) top quilt does not deserve such undignified treatment.

Does anyone know the best way to deal with this? Techniques? Medications? (Anything legal.) Incantations? (Nothing requiring the blood of innocents.)

I look forward to learning from the collective wisdom here.

I have a feeling this thread could be just as popular as the infamous "peeing from the hammock" thread.

Honestly, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I'm sure I've sneezed, wiped snot on my TQ's and probably drooled more than a few times over the years. Maybe if you had a dedicated bandanna close by (not to be mixed up with the one for cooking), that would suffice. Or, I'm sure there's some over the counter drug that you could take to dry you out.

You could also DIY something to give your TQ extra protection in the affected area.

Benadryl could help. Plus, I believe it's the exact same medicine as a sleeping pill believe it or not. So you won't have trouble sleeping!

I would not even concern myself with it. A runny nose is just 'normal' for me in the cold and it has zero affect on me when sleeping (-30 and -33c last couple nights and repeat tonight for me). Bury yourself in the quilts and keep your nose well buried with a breathe hole so as too pre warm the air. I'll wrap my quilt around my head and leave a breathe hole and YES you are going to get frost all over the outside of the quilt or whatever from your breathe....no escape on that. Shake off in morning then take the time to dry things out by day which can be about impossible cold camping....Hot tenting easy peasy.
You just can not ever worry about moisture on quilts.....nature of the beast. Dry when can. End of season wash things if so concerned.
Life is too Short to not feed the addiction....Hang on and explore the World

Thanks, everyone! Benadryl and Flonase definitely sound worth trying (I should be bringing Benadryl anyway). And the advice to worry less about keeping quilts completely dry and clean makes a lot of sense. I tend to obsess and fret over such things...I'll have to try to calm down a little.

Wait this is your bodies natural response to cold and I would recommend doping up just to stop it. Let the snot rockets glare and know you're not the only one with this issue. If you have a cold then that's a different story but otherwise it's natural and common.

Haha I certainly save tissues when out in the woods. At home, I plow thru boxes of tissues so fast.

I'm with TrailSlug - drugs aren't the answer here. I also get runny noses in the winter, and anytime I'm exercising, any season. I just blow my nose before bed and that's usually enough to let me get to sleep... seems once I'm asleep the flow stops. At home or in camp.

You can keep your quilt dry with a frost bib. I use an old fleece sweatshirt with the back & sleeves cut off so it's just a fleece bib. Put it on over your head, and drape the front outside your bag. The frost will collect on the bib, keeping your bag dry. You can find an example in one of Shug's videos! I also use the bib while hiking - my belly gets chilly, but I don't need more insulation on my back.
