    underquilt width for summer quilt

This question is halfway between here and DIY. I am hoping to modify my hammock by adding a UQ permanently (it was mentioned recently). My question is why are the UQ so wide for summer weights. If a pad can work, why not have loose insulation be similar widths? I'm thinking 3ft by 6.5 ft attached to the center in such a way that it would flex to allow lofting.
Is there any reason a 3ft wide unerquilt would not work?
    thanks,

If the quilt is too narrow it won’t cover your feet or shoulders. Also, narrow quilts tends to slip out from underneath.

If you are looking to save weight on a summertime quilt, it would be much better to make a shorter length and use a pad or pillow to keep feet warm.

A 40" wide, 3/4 length under quilt works fine for me at 6'-1" & a bit under 200#.

My experience has been a narrow pad leaves me with cold shoulders. I used a pad for a only a short time and had added wings at the shoulders to make it more useful.
Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....

    underquilt width for summer quilt

you can get a summer rated 3/4 length uq for around 12 oz or less. they're very packable. I even bring mine along when I'm winter camping to add some extra insulation too.
