Going to ground with a TQ and pad under a tarp?

I am making the move to quilts this year and have a dandy locally-made down quilt waiting for pickup.

My usual game plan is to plan on hammocking just about any time I backpack but I throw a lightweight Big Agnes pad in my pack in case the rest of the group wants to camp somewhere away from trees. I have usually used a sleeping bag and down UQ in my Warbonnet and can set up my tarp with a couple sticks to make a rain shelter. I'm then sleeping on the grass/dirt/sand but my pad keeps my bag clean and dry. When using a TQ on the bare ground does it get all nasty from a the damp ground as the sides go under your pad? are you able to keep it clean and off the ground or by design doesn't the extra wings on the TQ have to tuck under the pad?

I tried it as a test with a HG TQ. But I kept the quilt on my pad.
    Worked pretty good.
    Missed the hammock though~~~~

You could add a ground sheet or a tent footprint to your loadout. Wouldn't take up much pack space and would keep everything out of the dirt.

If it’s a situation where the hammock failed, then I’d put the hammock on the ground with TQ on top of it. Or I’d use a combination of my trash compactor bag, rain coat, hammock and pack to keep me off the ground.

If it was a planned possibility, then I’d carry a pad. This happened when I hiked in the Smokey Mountains and there are rules mandating the use of the shelters.

A sheet of window shrink film (ie: polycryo) is nearly weightless, packs small, and makes a great ground cloth. Works well enough that I have used it countless times. I tend to switch to my side when on the ground so a wide quilt is nice for this.

Shouldn't get dirty unless you get careless.

Just exactly what I do last night! Window-shield under pad, and top quilt on top. HH asym big tarp held up by trekking poles. Heavy rain, moderate winds, totally dry overnight!

I took the foot end of the plastic and folded/taped it so it makes a little pocket that the foot box of my TQ with my very long feet are covered and protected somewhat from rain coming in end of tarp.

I carry a 5'x7' peice of Tyvek everywhere. I even have one in my van in case I need to change a tire or slide under the vehicle. If judged by the ratio: # of uses/g, this easily one of my most valuable peices of gear. I started carrying it specifically for its "Go to ground" utility.

I like it guys! This got me thinking and I actually have a piece of Tyvek for when I thought sleeping in a GoreTex bivvy bag during a thunderstorm was a good idea. I'll see if I can fit that into the sack with my ground pad in it...

Most top quilts have a pad attachment strap accessory. With those, the side of the quilt are “attached” to the top side of the pad and tuck in underneath you. That way the quilt doesn’t drop down below the pad and more of the quilt is wrapped around you. This also reduces drafts around your neck.
