Leaning towards the DH Raven....tell me about that bug net

My son and I are avid campers but looking to get into hammock camping. I like the blackbird xlc but don't want to spend over $200, I like the Eldorado but it's out of stock and read somewhere they may not be making it any more?? (anyone know?). This leads me to the dream hammocks, I love the quality and customization and I was deciding between the Darien and the Raven. The Darien has the integrated full bug net but it's asymetrical but I'm not 100% sure which way I want to lay so the Raven caught my eye since it can accommodate either direction lay. The ONLY thing giving me pause is that bug net, it just seems like skeeter or creepy crawlies like spiders could make their way inside.

Can you Raven owners give me some feedback on how that net is working for you?

I'll do you one better there's several vendors that sell bug nets that are separate from the hammock and it is this avenue that I would advocate. This would depend on the kind of camping you're looking to do however. Winter camping doesn't require a bug net so this would be easily removable.

To answer the original question: we have two Ravens, and neither of them have offered anything but good bug defense. If you go with the Raven you will likely be very pleased.
If you prepare for failure you will probably succeed.

I don't own a raven (but do own a Darien, dangerbird and sparrow) but I can tell you once you lay in it the bugnet seals off. I used to have a separate hammock and bug net like GilligansWorld is tasing about and I prefer hammocks with a integrated bugnets better

Thanks Shug, I've been binge watching your channel lately, great stuff. Have you used your Raven often? What is your go to, everyday hammock at the moment?

I had a SL Raven and had no problems with bugs and the net design. When I bought a DL Sparrow I sold the Raven as a justification for the Sparrow purchase. Note the Raven does zip along the sides and is not like a separate aftermarket net as mentioned by another individual. I'll throw out another factor that may be more unique to my HYOH. I ended up using an adjustable whoopie style ridge line for both my WBBB XLC and Sparrow. For some reason lengthening the ridge line on both is where I find my sweet spot. On the WBBB XLC the net/top still works because the attachment system involves a toggle and loop attachment (at least on the models I've owned) For the Sparrow there is a limit to how much you can lengthen the ridge line before not being able to use the net/top. I believe that the Raven net design would not have this limitation to the extent the Sparrow does, i.e. it would lend itself well to a lengthened ridge line.

Having said that, not having a net/top on my Sparrow hasn't been a problem for me because the niche for my Sparrow is as an indoor hammock. If I wanted to use it outdoors during the bug season I could shorten the ride line enough to accommodate the net; use and independent after market bugnet (which are cheap and I have); or have Randy and crew make a custom net/top to fit my peculiarities.

PS: My .02 is you can't go wrong with choosing either the Raven or WBBB. I didn't find the Eldorado appealing because I do like/use the shelf on the WBBB.

I like the Raven. I also like the Eldorado. Both are excellent. Everyone is different. I actually probably prefer the lightweight double Eldorado over a single layer Raven, but find both very comfortable.

I've never had issues with bugs getting inside my Raven; and I've used it in some very buggy weather. The net works great.
