Greetings to all you folks going on the hang.

Sadly I wont be able to make it to this one due to some stuff that came up last minute.

However I donated two mesh tarp snake skins with cord storage on the ends that will work with 11-12' tarps for the raffle.

I saw the maple king wandering around in the woods and he said he would take them to you guys....I think.

Hope to see you all at the next one. Happy Hammocking. Two Speed

Thanks to both Mr. Grappler and Slowhike for comments already. Let me be a bit more specific. I've been camping and hiking off and on for nearly six decades and have slept comfortably in a tent in all kinds of conditions, including deep snow and -28 degree F temperatures. I did fine in hiking this Grayson Highlands area in October 2018 in the outer bands of a hurricane, when driving rain was so strong some hikers could not stand. That was my first experience hammock hiking. I was on the AT of a month begining mid April last year and had no problems except when the temperatures got into the low 30's- upper 20's. Then I felt cold in the hammock. I don't know whether I had not set up the underquilt properly or just needed a warmer rig. I will be bringing an array of gear to try things out, but am especially looking forward to picking the brains of experienced cool-weather hikers. I should note that I work hard to lower my base weight -- not stupid light but as light as is safely possible.

Hammock campers, when you win this one...
You will have defeated two past champions...Peeeeetey and Hickery
Both professional coffee drinkers and both able to tell stories that start out true enough and get better over time

I’m guaranteed to smoke both y’all critters
You’ve been scouted by my team
Only problem, unknowns are going to enter and burn through the pack taking first place
If that happens, I’m gonna quit drinking coffee, and never tell another lie...

Well it looks like PG just did - the fib thing!!!! I might just have to come see this in person!

What is this about Purdy boil? I'll bring the 4 min 8 oz and the 9 min 16 oz alcohol stoves. I'll try to work up a phosphorus burning stove , but it may burn a hole in the pot. Or Thermite may work too.

Scratches, sometimes I get cold with my 20* set, especially bottom quilt, when it’s in mid twenties

If I’m backpacking with a forecast in mid twenties, I carry my zero* set quilts

If I’m car camping with a mid twenties forecast I’ll bring and use both sets
    Underquilts stacked
Topquilts nested one inside the other

I have even backpacked both underquilts and a zero topquilt

Maybe I’m not setting up correctly!

You have a wealth of camping experience and it will be great camping with you

It can possibly drop into single digits—hope not
Two king size comforters can help when it gets real cold
One can be doubled or more and placed inside your hammock under you, and the other can be doubled and placed between you and topquilt. Or it can be draped over your hammock ridgeline to help retain heat and reduce effects of cold breeze

There will be campers there that will be able to help troubleshoot your underquilt

Shug has YouTube videos that show great information on pads for hammock insulation and topquilts and underquilts. Also how to use a sleeping bag as a kind of pea pod in addition to your pads and quilts. He even shows how to keep feet warm with sit pad, parka, Nalgene bottles, and toe warmers

If you get cold you can always sit by campfire and swap stories or even get in car. Sliding passenger seat all way back and laid all way down—almost as good as a hammock and engine running and heat on will probably work

But alas, there are no leaves, so the wind whistles through the branches a lot more in winter!
The weather link Deb gave is The Weather Channel.
I have not been able to bring up the weather station at the GHSP ranger station.
    I think it's broke.

Just for the heck of it, I got out a Mount Rogers Area map to remind myself of the approximant elevation changes.

    Park entrance/ Hwy 58... 3700
    Ranger Station...…………….3800
    Camp ground...……………….4300
    Wilburn Ridge...……………...5500

Several times I've been there when there was snow at the campground and as you traveled down toward the road, the snow/ ice lessened and driving conditions improved.

But it can be tricky at times.
I too will something make and joy in it's making

    Just checking Scratches.
Sounds like you'll do just fine.
Lots of ways to stay warm. Here's a summer quick fix for a friend...

Yes, the park service does indeed scrape the roads when needed.

Sounds like some serious stove competition!!!
Y'all watch Hickery… he's been known to put a MRE heat pad under his alcohol stove!!!
