Question How Can I Determine Fabric Weight From Measurements???

Its been a long time since I took algebra, but this is one of those occasions when I need the right formula to find "X".

I'm trying to find out how many ounces / yard*(squared). of some fabrics?

For instance, I have a hammock (hemmed) cloth of known length and width in inches.
I also have the weight in ounces.
I can measure the hems to adjust for that variable and add those few inches.
Is there a formula or maybe a table that you know of?

    Sure.

Oz./yard is the weight of your finished piece/the area of that piece. Not telling you anything here, I know.

If you have the length and width in inches all you need to do is divide each of those numbers by 36 first then multiply together to get the area in square yards.

    example: a 16 oz. fabric sized 144" by 72" accounting for seams and channels etc. would be 16 oz/ [(144/36) * (72/36)] = 16 / [4*2] = 16/8 or 2oz/yd^2

    Is that what you needed?

    Jeff-oh,

Yes, yes, yes! That's the math that I'm looking for.

I will practice this until it sinks in and I will remember it.
In the past, I've checked vendors descriptions and specifications. Sometimes they were way off or flat out lied for some reason. (ie. Told by Big Duck Canvas.com that both sides were printed when the wrong side was stark white...and other obvious advertised "errors")
Its been a while since doing the math and lost an online calculator that I used to have bookmarked.) This will help me label my inventory and check purchases.

    Thanks
